CGIAR Solutions to Realize the SDGs and Global Climate Agenda

10 September, 2014 by Valérie Poiré

CGIAR DD Logo WebThe year 2014 marks an historic opportunity to communicate the importance of research on sustainable agriculture to stakeholders involved in the climate change and development policy processes.

The first CGIAR Development Dialogues event, organized with participation and support from all CGIAR Research Centers and Programs, will focus global attention on the vital role of research on agriculture, livestock, forestry, fisheries, landscapes, and food systems in achieving sustainable development. The event will take place on September 25, 2014 in New York City at the Faculty House at Columbia University, alongside the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the inaugural meeting of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, and the UN Climate Summit, and will gather a by-invitation-only audience of about 250. Thousands more will participate online through live webcasting and social media channels.

The Dialogues will explore four key themes through a mix of keynote speeches, interactive break-out sessions and more informal networking throughout the day. Humidtropics’ Director, Kwesi Atta-Krah will lead a session on ‘Resilient systems and communities towards sustainable development: fostering the capacity to innovate’ under Theme 3 below, and will be a panel speaker in the session on ‘Integrated landscape approaches for agriculture, forestry and other land uses’ under Theme 4.

Theme 1: Prosperous, food secure, and resilient livelihoods

Theme 2: Healthier, innovative, capable, and inclusive communities

Theme 3: Efficient agriculture technologies for sustainable intensification

Theme 4: Climate change-resilient agro-ecosystems

The Development Dialogues present an opportunity for participants to help shape research and development for tomorrow’s food systems, landscapes and rural economies. The Dialogues are designed to be a yearly event to inform policy and leverage the global attention of world leaders, scientists, donor agents, journalists, civil society figures, private-sector actors, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) negotiators on the vital role that crop and animal agriculture, forestry, fisheries, landscapes and food systems play in sustainable development.
