One of the challenges to understanding the dynamics of agricultural systems has long been the fact that while many decisions are made at the individual farm household level, the landscape and market level consequences are more complex than a simple aggregation of those choices. My new paper in Food Policy journal, supported by Humidtropics, lays out an innovative modeling approach to better link local, landscape and market level processes. This is an example of the types of new approaches that Humidtropics is developing to better tackle the complexities of agricultural systems. ‘From … [Read more...]
Biogas Technology Helps Manage Livestock Waste in Vietnam
It is known that animal waste produces methane gas, which is 25 times more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide. According to some sources 78.500 million tons of animal waste is generated per year in Vietnam and quite a significant portion is dumped into the environment. A technology that contributes to better management of methane emissions from animal waste is the use of biogas. A biogas plant is easy to set up, even in smallholder farming systems, because it does not require much investment. A biogas plant stores the livestock manure in a brick dome-shaped tank and precludes … [Read more...]
Participatory Diagnostic Tool for Complex Agricultural Problems
Rapid Appraisal of Agricultural Innovation Systems (RAAIS) is a participatory, diagnostic tool for integrated analysis of complex agricultural problems and capacity to innovate. RAAIS facilitates the analysis of interactions between: (1) different dimensions, levels and stakeholder dynamics of complex agricultural problems, (2) innovation capacity in the agricultural system, and (3) the existence and performance of the agricultural innovation support system. RAAIS has been developed and tested to identify and analyze opportunities for dealing with parasitic weeds in rainfed rice production in … [Read more...]
